Round about 12 noon, in the rain, thoughts start to turn to lunch. Harry’s done this before though, and went for a final pass over the depths of the pool directly beneath the lodge. Holding the boat in the fast water in front of the Croy gave Harry the opportunity to cast a perfect line and present the fly in a manner not possible from the bank. Swept through the lie by the current, it took very few casts before the fly was taken by one of the salmon that often lurk there undisturbed. A phenomenonal run ensued, taking all the line and most of the backing, with the fisherman’s favourite soundtrack – a Hardy’s Perfect screaming at top pitch.
After a tense boat chase to gain some line advantage, this beautiful 12 pounder was finally netted beneath the bridge on a Willie Gunn – congratulations Harry, King of the late lunch!
